You all know I’m a fan of a good social experiment.
There was the somewhat nutty and only half successful no shopping experiment of 2009. Then came the “hugs not shrugs” attempt to befriend Portland canvassers. And don’t even get me started on 2010, the year of magical happenings. So you can imagine my glee when a good friend of mine shared her fascinating, bold new experiment with me.
Here’s the scoop: three single gals, all in their late 20s/early 30s have made a pact to get married. By 2012. The catch is that none of them are currently in a relationship. In order to make their goals, they’ll each have to meet the right guy, date him, get him to put a ring on it, and walk down the aisle in just a little bit longer than a year. Sounds a little crazy, no?
It’s a lot crazy. And I love it. I love the boldness of speaking something into reality, the huge leap of faith it takes to trust that God will provide, the way these gals will be sustained by prayer and motivated by the accountability of their community. Obviously, not everything will be within their control, but they’re vowing to do their part by being proactive, getting out and meeting people, flirting, going on dates, and knocking down the walls that so many of us build up when we’re single. I also trust that these ladies are strongly rooted in their faith, and that this adventure will draw them closer to God, no matter the outcome.
Although, I’ll admit – I totally think it’s going to happen. I mean, when Annie and I declared the year of magical happenings, we didn’t have a clue what that meant, but we wound up going on the greatest ride of our lives. Who knows how these things all work, but I believe that God often uses initiative and rewards bold action. I have seen amazing answers to impossible prayers this spring, so I keep asking God to show up in bigger ways.

There is certainly some danger in this project, but what I like about it is that they aren’t treating their singleness as a stagnant position. If what they desire is intimate relationship, I think it’s totally okay to go after.
Right? I love that they’re taking the initiative and being bold! Beats sitting around waiting for things to happen!
